或问儒dao之先后。抱朴子答曰:“dao者,儒之本也;儒者,dao之末也。先以为yinyang之术,众于忌讳,使人拘畏;而儒者博而寡要,劳而少功;墨者俭而难遵,不可遍循;法者严而少恩,伤破仁义。唯dao家之教,使人jing1神专一,动合无形,包儒墨之善,总名法之要,与时迁移,应wu变化,指约而易明,事少而功多,务在全大宗之朴,守真正之源者也。而班固以史迁先黄老而后六经,谓迁为谬。夫迁之洽闻,旁综幽隐,沙汰事wu之臧否,覈实古人之邪正。其评论也,实原本于自然,其褒贬也,皆准的乎至理。不虚mei,不隐恶,不雷同以偶俗。刘向命世通人,谓为实录;而班固之所论,未可据也。固诚纯儒,不究dao意,玩其所习,难以折中。夫所谓dao,岂唯养生之事而已乎?易曰:立天之dao,曰yin与yang;立地之dao,曰柔与刚;立人之dao,曰仁与义。又曰:易有圣人之dao四焉,苟非其人,dao不虚行。又于治世隆平,则谓之有dao,危国luan主,则谓之无dao。又坐而论dao,谓之三公,国之有dao,贫贱者耻焉。凡言dao者,上自二仪,下逮万wu,莫不由之。但黄老执其本,儒墨治其末耳。今世之举有dao者,盖博通乎古今,能仰观俯察,历变涉微,达兴亡之运,明治luan之ti,心无所惑,问无不对者,何必修长生之法,慕松乔之武者哉?而guan窥诸生,臆断瞽说,闻有居山林之间,宗伯yang之业者,则毁而笑之曰,彼小dao耳,不足算也。嗟乎!所谓抱萤烛于环堵之内者,不见天光之焜烂;侣鲉鰕于迹水之中者,不识四海之浩汗;重江河之shen,而不知吐之者昆仑也;珍黍稷之收,而不觉秀之者丰壤也。今苟知推崇儒术,而不知成之者由dao。dao也者,所以陶冶百氏,范铸二仪,胞胎万类,酝酿彝lun者也。世间浅近者众,而shen远者少,少不胜众,由来久矣。是以史迁虽长而不见誉,班固虽短而不见弹。然wu以少者为贵,多者为贱,至于人事,岂独不然?故藜藿弥原,而芝英不世;枳棘被野,而寻木间秀;沙砾无量,而珠璧甚鲜;鸿隼屯飞,而鸾凤罕chu;虺蜴盈薮,而虬龙希觌;班生多党,固其宜也。夫dao者,内以治shen,外以为国,能令七政遵度,二气告和,四时不失寒燠之节,风雨不为暴wu之灾,玉烛表昇平之徵,澄醴彰德洽之符,焚lun虹霓寝其祅,穨云商羊戢其翼,景耀高照,嘉禾毕遂,疫疠不liu,祸luan不作,巉垒不设,干戈不用,不议而当,不约而信,不结而固,不谋而成,不赏而劝,不罚而肃,不求而得,不禁而止,chu1上而人不以为重,居前而人不以为患,号未发而风移,令未施而俗易,此盖dao之治世也。故dao之兴也,则三五垂拱而有馀焉。dao之衰也,则叔代驰骛而不足焉。夫唯有馀,故无为而化mei。夫唯不足,故刑严而jian繁。黎庶怨于下,皇灵怒于上。或洪波横liu,或亢yang赤地,或山谷易ti,或冬雷夏雪,或liu血漂橹,积尸筑京,或坑降万计,析骸易子,城愈高而冲愈巧,池愈shen而梯愈妙,法令明而盗贼多,盟约数而叛luan甚,犹风波骇而鱼鳖扰于渊,纤罗密而羽禽躁于泽,豺狼众而走兽剧于林,爨火猛而小鲜糜于鼎也。君臣易位者有矣,父子推刃者有矣,然后忠义制名于危国,孝子收誉于败家。疾疫起而巫医贵矣,dao德丧而儒墨重矣。由此观之,儒dao之先后,可得定矣。”

或问曰:“昔赤松子王乔琴高老氏彭祖务成郁华皆真人,悉仕于世,不便遐遁,而中世以来,为dao之士,莫不飘然绝迹幽隐,何也?”抱朴子答曰:“曩古纯朴,巧伪未萌,其信dao者,则勤而学之,其不信者,则嘿然而已。谤毁之言,不吐乎口,中伤之心,不存乎xiong也。是以真人徐徐于民间,不促促于登遐耳。末俗偷薄,雕伪弥shen,玄淡之化废,而邪俗之党繁,既不信dao,好为讪毁,谓真正为妖讹,以神仙为诞妄,或曰惑众,或曰luan群,是以上士耻居其中也。昔之达人,杜渐防微,se斯而逝,夜不待旦,睹几而作,不俟终日。故赵害鸣犊,而仲尼旋轸,醴酒不设,而穆生星行,彼众我寡,华元去之。况乎明哲,业尚本异,有何恋之当住其间哉?夫渊竭
