或曰:“圣明御世,唯贤是宝,而学仙之士,不肯宦,人皆修,谁复佐政事哉?”抱朴曰:“背圣主而山栖者,巢许所以称也;遭有而遁世者,庄伯所以为贵也;轩辕之临天下,可谓至理也,而广成不与焉;唐尧之有四海,可谓太平也,而偓佺不佐焉,而德化不以之损也,才不以之乏也;天乙革命,而务光负石以投河,姬武翦商,而夷齐不于西山;齐桓之兴,而少稷枕于陋巷;魏文之隆,而木散发于西河;四老凤戢于商洛,而不妨大汉之多士也;周党麟跱于林薮,而无损光武之刑厝也。夫贵不能动其心,极富不能移其好,濯缨沧狼,不降不辱,以芳林为台榭,峻岫为大厦,翠兰为絪床,绿叶为帏幙,被褐代衮衣,薇藿当嘉膳,非躬耕不以充饥,非妻织不以蔽,千载之中,时或有之,况又加之以委六亲于族,捐室家而不顾,背荣华如弃迹,绝可心,凌嵩峻以独往,侣影响于名山,内视于无形之域,反听乎至寂之中,八极之内,将遽几人?而吾乃恐君之无臣,不亦多忧乎?”

抱朴曰:“书之于黄老者,盖少许耳,率多后世之好事者,各以所知见而滋长,遂令篇卷至于山积。古人质朴,又多无才,其所论理,既不周悉,其所证,又不著明,皆阙所要而难解,解之又不远,不足以演畅微言,开示愤悱,劝有志,教戒始学,令知玄妙之涂径,祸福之源也。徒诵之万遍,殊无可得也。虽博涉,然宜详择其善者,而后留意,至于不要之书,不足寻绎也。末学者或不别作者之浅,其于名为家之言,便写取累箱盈筐,尽心思索其中。是探燕巢而求凤卵,搜井底而捕鳝鱼,虽加至勤,非其所有也,不得必可施用,无故消弃日月,空有疲困之劳,了无锱铢之益也。失当世之务,退无长生之效,则莫不指之曰,彼修如此之勤,而不得度世,是天下果无不死之法也;而不知彼之求仙,犹临河羡鱼,而无网罟,非河中之无鱼也。又五千文虽,然皆泛论较略耳。其中了不肯首尾全举其事,有可承者也。但暗诵此经,而不得要,直为徒劳耳,又况不及者乎?至于文关令尹喜之徒,其属文笔,虽祖述黄老,宪章玄虚,但演其大旨,永无至言。或复齐死生,谓无异以存活为徭役,以殂殁为休息,其去神仙,已千亿里矣,岂足耽玩哉?其寓言譬喻,犹有可采,以供给碎用,充御卒乏,至使末世利佞,无行之弊,得以老庄为窟薮,不亦惜乎?”

损年命。唯有得其节宣之和,可以不损。若不得诀之术,万无一人为之而不以此自伤煞者也。玄素都容成公彭祖之属,盖载其事,终不以至要者著于纸上者也。志求不死者,宜勤行求之。余承师郑君之言,故记以示将来之信者,非臆断之谈也。余实复未尽其诀矣。一涂之士,或专守接之术,以规神仙,而不作金丹之大药,此愚之甚矣。”

或曰:“学仙之士,独洁其而忘大,背世主而有不臣之慢,余恐长生无成功,而罪罟将见及也。”抱朴答曰:“夫北人石善卷州,皆大才也,而沈遁放逸,养其浩然,昇降不为之亏,大化不为之缺也。况学仙之士,未必有经国之才,立朝之用,得之不加尘之益,弃之不觉毫釐之损者乎?方今九有同宅,而幽荒来仕,元凯委积,无所用之。士有待次之滞,官无暂旷之职;勤久者有迟叙之叹,勋者有循资之屈;济济之盛,莫此之,一介之徒,非所乏也。昔晋舍视膳之役,弃储贰之重,而灵王不责之以不孝;尹生委衿带之职,违式遏之任,而有周不罪之以不忠。何者,彼诚亮其非轻世薄主,直以所好者异,匹夫之志,有不可移故也。夫有之主,垢善恕,知人心之不
