之原一致。是以至人垂训,将以微言,演为真宗,贻厥后学,包括六艺,周流八表。或因事以立言,或寓言以诠意。至如交乐于天,交食于地,不相与为事,不期与为谋,善无所私,恶无所弃,施之于教,何以劝勉?经曰:“不争善胜,不言善应。”正直如绳,平易如水。”常务斯道,何往不臻?又曰:“善建不拔,善抱不脱,子孙以祭祀不辍。”斯言信矣!昔放勋钦明,光宅天下,人歌击壤,政叶雍熙。可谓善乎?建抱,善乎?拔脱,宜其帝绪蕃远,贻厥孙谋,绵绵瓜瓞,迈德垂裕。何丹朱之不嗣,而祭祀辍乎?又天无二日,民无二主,若以天下观,天下岂有二君乎?夫君为元首,臣为股肱,君无贤臣,谁与共理?粤若舜举八元,致垂拱之化;汉用三杰,成霸王之业。夏殷之末,任佞去贤,宗社沦亡,为无匡辅。经称不尚贤者,其旨何也?圣人立教,专气致柔,故形不欲劳,性不欲竭,深根固蒂,可以常存。则有朝穆肆任,劳逸过度,促龄损性,却以为然。又有惟静惟清,守贞守朴。二经之说,何取则焉?又闻善摄生者,动与吉会,武不措爪,兵难容刃。单豹?居水饮,身代俱损,寿永色孺,不免噬搏。何卫生之不异,而利害之顿殊?子既洞晓元经,探微索隐,矛盾若此,何以会明?侧席虚心,伫闻启沃。 对:臣闻道之为物,无名无形。盖圣人酌而用之,推而宏之,取其精以修身,用其粗以救物,从本降迹,散朴为器。于是有可道之道,忘言之言。其大略虽以冲寂为宗,虚极为体,然妙用无联,故不可致诘。今陛下诘其体,探其宗,岂不欲因言演教,于教奚有?夫长风吹而众窍号,则大无不动,细无不应。况陛下用大道为风,以鼓群有。臣则吹万之一音也,敢不唱于众窍之末?臣谨按天有施,地有利。用天之施,以处其和,谓之交乐。分地之利,以养其正,谓之交食。夫相与生于有为,有为生于有事,有事则谋名存矣。善恶生于公私,公私生于用,用则弃名立矣。然圣人有为不为焉,有事无事焉,有谋不谋焉,有善无善焉,有恶无恶焉。泯善恶于一致,合异同于万殊,则妙门可存,教父斯在。臣又按《道德经》云:“天网恢恢,疏而不失。”常有司杀者杀之,此不争善胜之应也。文宣王称:“天何言哉?四时行焉,百物生焉。”此不言善应之验也。《周书》云:“无偏无党,王道荡荡。”此正直如绳之效也。经又云:“居善地,心善泉,与善仁,言善信。”此平易如水之证也。陛下宏其言,挹其道,以为天下式,三十有二载矣。且复推功外名,不有不恃;考言询事,若冲若缺。诏臣等曰:“常务斯道,曷往不臻?”臣鲰生也,焉知其辨?虽然,有一于此,愿陛下守而勿失,与神为一,使神不远于人,人不远于天,天人合并,如影响交应,则甚夷之道,焉往而不臻?夫有国者,必善建皇极,善抱至道。道之不存,倾其宗、迁其社之谓拔,桀放南巢,受死牧野是也。极之不建,失其器、亡其国之谓脱,太康去洛?,幽王败骊山,厉王流彘是也。至如尧知天历在躬,故以至公官天下,天下戴之而不辞;知丹朱不肖,又以至公禅天下,天下去之而不怨,可谓迈德矣。其后裔更霸迭王,重之以御龙唐杜之代禄,可谓垂裕矣。陛下兴废继绝,立五帝祠,即春秋备其祭典,亦可谓祭祀不辍矣。方之拔脱,臣谓不同。经曰:“不尚贤,使民不争。”大哉圣人之知微知彰乎!夫尚贤者,国家之所当先。然古先圣人曰:“虽求贤审官,其用未始不无为也。”而圣人能无为于求贤,不能使无为无迹存,则有为者尚之以为利。于是有饰,智以惊愚,修身以明?,其渐起于一时之名,其弊存乎千载之后。不尚贤者,非谓废股肱之任、绝匡辅之力也。盖欲因时致功,功成则遣而遗之;因义立事,事遂则有而无之。无之则迹灭,迹灭则争息,争息则于为无为,于事无事。虽八元以翼唐弼虞,三杰之戡秦灭项,其无为无事一也。若夫齐天地,冥万物,莫大于全真。专气致柔,全真之本也;惟清惟静,全真之中也。各然其所然,各可其所可,全真之末也。设教者三合其道,一以贯之。虽逍遥与道养殊途,然性情与力命同辙。苟因其合而较其分,则子产不得不劳于刑政,朝穆不得不逸于肆任。若矫其肆任之性,以徇刑政之端,是续凫截鹤,亏其全矣。故圣人以大猷御六气之辨,以大方合二经之旨。明应变无方,立言不一。学者宜忘言以究其体统,不可执言以滞其筌蹄。经不云乎?反者道之动,惟动而常静。”静可以取则,权足以合义,义无反经。凡养生者,以本为精,以物为粗,闭其外,慎其内。迹不践凶危之境,故兵不能容其刃;心不居冯暴之地,故武安得措其爪。
